Bellona Island, Solomon Islands
Rennell and Bellona Province

john

Bellona is a small densely populated island 180 km south of Guadalcanal. The island has a fertile interior and surrounded by cliffs from 30-70m high. The old atoll rim has been uplifted to 85 m above sea level.

Bellona is about 10 km long and 2.5 km wide. A single track runs along the centre of the island. There are many caves on the island. Bellona has a greater soil cover and is more fertile than Rennell Island.

At Matahenua on the western end of the island there are sacred stones. These play an important role in the traditions of the island. The surrounding area has caves, which were inhabited until 1930's.

Some of the attractions in the west are: Angu cave, Nggabengga sacred site, Sungaghina battle site, and Hiti pool. In eastern Bellona attractions are: Tapuna cave, Tehaa cave, Hiti walls, and Matakuvea.
