Guadalcanal Island, Solomon Islands
Central Province

john

Guadalcanal is the largest island in the archipelago and the most complex geological structure. The island is 150 km long in an east west direction and 48 km wide with a land area of 5300 sq km. An alluvial plain in the north is 11 km wide and covers 460 sq km.

Honiara, the capital of the Solomons is located on the northern coast, 40 km from the NW point of the island.

The island was first inhabited 6000 years ago. The interior of Guadalcanal contains the country's highest mountains: Makarakomburu (2447m) and Popomanaseu (2330m).

There are two weather zones on the island. The southern coast has high rainfall, and the northern coast around Honiara is in a rain shadow.

Hot springs are located in several places on Guadalcanal. Most of the large rivers have salt water crocodiles. The southern coast contains steep cliffs. The area has strong currents, tidal rips, and heavy surf.
