Kolombangara is an active volcano, which has erupted within the past 10,000 years. The island has a classic cone shape rising to a summit elevation of 1770 m.
The island covers 685 sq km and is 30 km across. There was a population of 5603 at last census in 1999. Most inhabitants live on the SW side, within 500 m of the sea. The island was extensively logged until mid 1980's.
The summit of Kolombangara contains a 4 km wide caldera with four peaks (Veve, Rano, Mbatuvana, and Tapalamenggutu). Inside the crater are moss covered trees.
Climbing the volcano takes 8 hours and 15 km of hiking.
A hot spring is located near Ndughore peak on the southern side of the island.
