The island is part of the Three Sisters Group about 20 km NNE of Kirakira. There is one village on the SW side of the island with about 100 inhabitants.
The island is 6 km long and 1.5 km wide. Malaupaina Island contains one of the richest identified marine regions in the Solomon islands, with 243 species of fish identified. There are crocodiles on the island.
There is an extensive shallow lagoon in the south of the island which is almost land-locked.
