Nggatokae Island is located at the southern end of Marovo Lagoon. The island is an extinct volcano with a summit elevation of 887m (Mariu).
The island covers an area of 110 sq km, and had a population of 2367 at last census in 1999. Mbili passage on the north side of the island is used by ships to enter Marovo lagoon.
Mbili village is noted for its carvings and sunsets.
A footpath follows the coast around the island. The main villages are: Kavolavata, Mbiche, Peava, Penjuku, and Sombiro.
