Savo Island, Solomon Islands
Central Province

john

Savo is an active volcano 14 km north of Guadalcanal. The island covers an area of 31 sq km. The last volcanic activity was in 1835 with central crater eruptions and pyroclastic flows. In 1568 Mendana saw eruptions at Savo Island. Savo has a summit elevation of 510 m and steep shores with little room for anchorages.

The volcano is potentially dangerous with Peleean style eruptions occurring in the past. There is a well preserved crater with a central lava dome.

The eruptions from 1830-40 produced extensive pyroclastic flows and avalanches. There are thermal areas and hot springs on the island, and potential for further eruptions. The largest thermal area is Fisher Voghala. Closeby is Mbiti Voghala which has bubbling mud pots.

Megapode birds are found on Savo Island. The megapode is an endangered species which requires ground a temperature of 33 deg C to incubate their eggs. The water between Savo and Guadalcanal is named Ironbottom Sound after the WWII battles which sunk many ships.
