Shortland Island is 22 km long and 16 km wide, situated close to Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea.

The Shortland Island group is geologically classified as part of Bougainville Island. The island covers an area of 420 sq km and the population was 3500 in 1999.

Shortland Island has low relief and is composed of andesitic lavas in the north and sandstone and coral reef debris in the south. There is recent raised coral reef. The main town on the island is Korovou.
