Ulawa Island is located geographically close to Malaita Island, but is falls into Makira Province. It is over 80 km from Kirakira.
Ulawa Island is 17 km long and 5 km wide with an area of 65 sq km. It has a thickly forested interior. The western coast is uplifted coral. The island has been settled since 750 AD.
It was sighted by Mendana in 1568 who named it Ulawa de Trequeda.
The islanders developed Weto dance which is now performed across the province.
