Vella Lavella is a volcanic island located NW of Gizo. The island contains 6 volcanic cones and one thermal area. The island is covered in trees and contains a summit elevation of 790 m. The island covers an area of 670 sq km, and had a population of 9160 at last census in 1999.
Freshwater crocodiles are found in Ulo River.
Mt Tambisala
Summit elevation 790 m. Fumarolic. Deep volcanic crater which contains swamp and hot steaming vents.
Ulo River Thermal Area
Hot volcanic sand at Paraso Bay.
5 km along the path inland from the coast is the thermal area.
There are 2 km of hot springs. Nonda Hill
Summit elevation 530 m. Thermal area.
Kumba Hill
Summit elevation 760 m. Thermal area.
